MIcrosoft will not be patching the latest gaping hole in Windows 98. This also means the end of an entire generation of "Designed for Windows 98" hardware out there, for all intents and purposes. Like any laptop made before 2001. The old Vaio still going strong? Too bad, looks like it's time for an upgrade.
Also from the artice:
Microsoft has been providing fixes for only "critical" flaws the past couple of years and is ending support altogether next month, after its planned July 11 patch release. Windows XP with Service Pack 1 reaches its end of support on Oct. 10, 2006.
Certainly a bleak day for bitter-enders everywhere.

In the latest Microsquish Security Bulleting MS06-015, there is a workaround (General Information -> Vunerability Details -> Windows Shell Vulnerablity -> Workarounds), i.e., Block TCP ports 139 and 445 at the firewall.
